This is what Swedes want from their office environment

What exactly do employees look for in an office space? Is it peace and quiet, a strong sense of community, or something else entirely?

A survey commissioned by workspace expert Technopolis, conducted through YouGov’s Omnibus online panel, reveals that Swedes have clear expectations for their office environments.

The survey gathered insights from 762 Swedes between the ages of 20 and 65 about their office spaces. The results confirm the obvious: a good working environment is crucial for Swedes to want to stay in their current jobs. A striking 88% of respondents consider it important or very important when deciding whether to remain in their job.

But what makes a good working environment, according to Swedes? The results are clear: the ability to work undisturbed is the top priority, chosen by 47% of respondents. At the same time, social interaction with colleagues is almost as important, with 46 percent valuing the physical presence in the office.

“The results highlight the importance of listening to employees when designing a work environment. If the office does not meet their needs, they are less likely to want to come in. People want a space where they can focus, but at the same time, one of the most valued aspects of the office is the opportunity to interact with colleagues,” says Jaana von Bell, Concept Manager for Workspace and Customer Solutions at Technopolis.

The office of the future – a balancing act

After the ability to work undisturbed, 31% of Swedes said having an office close to home is the most important factor, while 29% stated that social gatherings with colleagues was the most important factor.

“We see that location has remained a key factor related to office spaces over the years. Often, employees evaluate office location based on its proximity to their home, as this survey confirms. However, for companies, the most important consideration should be accessibility – ensuring that the office is well-connected with varied and efficient transport options. This is often the best way to meet employees’ desire for a convenient location,” says von Bell.

The survey results show that employers must take a broad approach to meeting employee expectations. After an extended period of remote work, many employees have reconsidered what kind of work environment suits them best. To attract and retain talent in today’s highly competitive labor market, companies need to create a well-rounded workplace – one that combines smart functionality, spaces for focus, social opportunities, and an inspiring environment.

“When the office meets employees’ needs, it enhances productivity, well-being, and overall appeal. Employers who listen to their teams and successfully balance quiet zones with inspiring common areas in a well-connected location will have a strong advantage in the competition for talent,” concludes von Bell.
